Keeping a Colic Diary
We expect a baby to cry, but when the crying continues for extended periods even when you’ve tried everything you can to calm your baby, you can’t help but worry. Is it colic or is it something more? If there appears to be no obvious reason for the crying and your baby is in good health, then chances are you’re dealing with colic. The best way to help your doctor confirm that colic is the cause of your baby’s crying is to keep a colic diary.

How a Colic Diary Can Help
A colic diary is a helpful tool for both your doctor and you. Tracking the frequency and duration of crying spells and feedings can help your doctor confirm colic and spot food intolerances and allergies. A colic diary can also help you predict when your baby is more likely to cry and identify any possible triggers. Knowing their crying pattern also lets you take measures to comfort your baby before an episode begins.
A detailed diary that chronicles everything from when your baby cries and what you do to comfort your baby, to your baby’s stool and urine frequency can also help your doctor rule out other possible medical conditions.
How to Keep a Colic Diary
The following are things to note in your colic diary:
- Periods of fussing and crying. Note how long the crying episode lasts and what was done by whom to comfort the baby, such as holding the baby.
- Signs and symptoms. Take note of your baby’s posture, body language and other physical signs and symptoms during a crying spell, such as clenched fists, bloated stomach, and passing gas while crying. Even changes in the pitch of your baby’s cries can be helpful to your doctor.
- Sleep pattern. Write down the baby’s sleeping periods and how long each one lasted. Also, did the baby sleep alone or with someone in the room?
- Feedings. Note how often the baby was fed and whether they were given formula or breastfed. Also be sure to note details such as whether the baby spit up, burped, etc. Type of formula and how much was given is also important to keep track of.
- Your food intake if breastfeeding. Keep track of the foods that you eat if you’re breastfeeding.
Keeping track of these details in a colic diary is an important part of helping your doctor rule out other conditions that could cause your baby to cry excessively. It can also help you and your doctor identify your baby’s colic pattern so that you can take measures to try to prevent, or at least lessen, the severity and duration of episodes.
Along with symptoms and the other details you track, your doctor will also perform a physical exam, checking for tender spots and pain, fever, and other possible causes. In most cases a doctor can tell if a baby has colic based on the symptoms provided by the parent.
You can download a colic diary PDF to help you keep track of all of these details. Be sure to include any extra details that may be important, such as activities and mood during the periods that your baby is awake.
What Parents Are Saying

“Colic calm saves the night!!! I used colic calm when my son was first born, he was extremely colicky. That with a change of formula has cleared it up. But tonight he woke up with a horrible tummy ache. (he’s 8 months) I reached for the colic calm right away and within minutes of me giving it to him he stopped crying and shortly after that he fell asleep. This working momma thanks you!!!”

“My daughter was colicky from her 6th week. She used to cry continuously for about 3 hours daily, it would start late in the night and go on until 3 am. We tried massaging, swaddling, singing but nothing would stop her cry. I have found colic calm on the internet and was wondering about it when my neighbour who came by to see our baby mentioned that her son was colic too and she used colic calm and it worked miraculously. I browsed the colic calm website read about it and ordered immediatley. Though the dose says 2 ml, I started to give 1ml to my baby in 2 doses and she was responding to it, she would only cry for 5 to 10 mins therafter and would dose off. I continued to gave colic calm to my daughter for around 2 weeks. Thanks to Colic Calm my daughter stopped crying now and is a happy baby :))”
